Peru

This evening we heard from Chuck and Lindquist and Juan Fernández, recently returned from Peru.

The World Mission Prayer League has been at work in Peru since 1984. Ramón and Carola Rosales began the effort, in collaboration with “Alfalit” — a Peruvian ministry dedicated to the promotion of adult literacy. In 1994 we were joined by the Swedish Lutheran Mission, an organization that has contributed both Swedish and Danish missionaries through the years. Today our team is comprised of Peruvian colleagues, and a handful of North Americans, Swedes and Danes.

Three independent Lutheran congregations have grown up in the area: in “Las Brisas,” “Las Lomas,” and in the sugar cooperative, San Antonio de Pomalca. The congregations are served each by their own pastors and lay leadership. They are growing faith communities, and a light in their own neighborhoods and beyond.

Our ministry today consists in accompanying these Peruvian friends and colleagues in pursuit of their own ministries and callings. Our prayer is to build the sort of partnership that will enable joint outreach and service — not only in Chiclayo and northern Peru, but beyond.

It is estimated that approximately 10,000 Latin American missionaries are engaged in cross-cultural service here and there around the world. Many will come from Peru as well. Some will come from Chiclayo. (See COMIBAM).
