So who is WMPL?
The World Mission Prayer League is a Lutheran community in the mission of God. We are committed to some very simple ideas: the power of Christian community, the essential ministry of prayer, the adventure of pursuing a simplified lifestyle... and the urgent challenge of sharing in all the world the wonderful news about Jesus.
We are today some 6000 members across the United States and Canada, and in seventeen countries around the world. Approximately 120 serve as full-time workers in pioneering service and outreach ministries in Asia, Africa and Latin America, as well as the United States and Canada.
What does the Prayer League do?
Most of all, we pray. As one of our founders said, "Prayer is our working method."
After we have prayed, we serve. We serve the sick with healing, the suffering with the balm of God's peace -- and the spiritually lost with the good news of God's grace through the redemptive work of Jesus Christ.
Where does the Prayer League do it?
We are at work today in seventeen countries around the world -- from the grassy steppes of Central Asia to the steamy lowlands of the Amazon basin. We are in urban Eastern Europe. We are in the remote Himalayas, desertic East Africa, among peoples of the Islands -- and many points in between.
In North America, we have offices in Minneapolis, Los Angeles, Seattle, Gettysburg, and Camrose, Alberta.
Since when has the Prayer League been at work?
Our first international workers were sent in 1904, by our predecessor agency The American Board of the Santal Mission. They joined a Santal Mission work in India. In 1937, the South American Mission Prayer League, another predecessor agency, sent workers to Bolivia. We have functioned as the World Mission Prayer League since 1945 -- and have sent hundreds and hundreds of international workers since, for short- and long-term service.
Why?
Why do we do what we do? The short answer is because of Jesus.
We do we what we do because...
