“Redeemer” Evangelical Lutheran Church, on Avenida Busch in downtown La Paz, celebrates this month its “bodas de oro” — its golden anniversary. The church was planted by Prayer League missionaries fifty years ago. The extended church community gathered in celebration on September 13 and 14.
The event began with a festive “kermesse” on Saturday afternoon, followed by a traditional dance competition featuring the OANSA clubs sponsored by the congregation. (OANSA is the Latin American equivalent of AWANA clubs in the English-speaking world.)
Pastor Julio Ascarrunz officiated a celebration worship service on Sunday morning, with Chuck Lindquist of our Home Offices preaching. Juan Fernandez presented a memorial plaque and words of encouragement from our Latin American desk. Members and pastors past and present gathered with representatives from the neighborhood and partnering congregations for the special event. Another “kermesse” and extended fellowship followed worship in the rear courtyard.
RTC - Dedication of Studio September 12, 2008

Approximately 30 persons attended the event, including area pastors, radio and television staff, representatives from neighboring ministries, as well as two representatives from the Prayer League’s home offices in Minneapolis.
Cruz Ãlvarez, the Director of Radio-Television Caranavi, welcomed participants and gave a brief overview of the ministry itself and its new facility. The group gathered in various locations throughout the building to pray for corresponding ministry functions — administration, accounting, programming, “ABC Kids,” etc. Dionicio Calle led the group to the rooftop to pray for the overall outreach of radio and television broadcasts. The program concluded with prayer for radio and television staff, as area pastors and friends gathered round to entrust them to God’s care.
Radio-Television Caranavi celebrates this year its thirty-ninth anniversary.
IELB - Seventy Years Sowing! September 8, 2008
Posted by Administrator in : Uncategorized , add a commentThe Bolivian Evangelical Lutheran Church (IELB) is seventy years old. On Sunday, September 8, the church marked its anniversary.
This dynamic and indigenous Lutheran church dates its foundation to the arrival of Prayer League missionaries Ernest Weinhardt and John Carlsen in 1938. The pair arrived in Moco Moco, northeast of La Paz. Today the church numbers some 20,000 members and 120 congregations across the country, from Santa Cruz to Cochabamba, and the jungles of the Beni to the high altiplano.
Guests for the celebration included the General Secretary of the Lutheran World Federation in Geneva, the Bishop and other representatives of the Montana Synod (ELCA), representatives from another companion synod in Germany, several delegations from partnering churches and mission agencies, as well as Chuck Lindquist and Juan Fernández from our own Home Offices.
The day began with festive worship and a message from Dr. Ishmael Noko of the Lutheran World Federation. Approximately six hundred packed “El SinaÔ Lutheran Church in RÃo Seco, in the altiplano. Following the five-hour service, a typical “aptapi” was served – much like a Minnesotan potluck. An ordination service followed later in the afternoon, with Chuck sharing the message. Twenty-three candidates were ordained into the ministry of Word and Sacrament.
One of the ordinands is pictured here, Bertha Uturunco Mamani. Bertha considers herself a “granddaughter” of Marge Erickson. Marge and Henrik Erickson invested much of their lives in service to the mission of God in Bolivia and in partnership with the Prayer League. Marge is pictured here in an inset, with a young Aymara girl.
The theme of the day was “Seventy years of sowing.” Setenta años sembrando. Join us in thanking God for the seed sown faithfully for many years – and for the fruit that we celebrate today.
