Balancing Principles of Equity, Stewardship, and counting the Cost

The World Mission Prayer League is a praying community committed to knowing Christ, sharing the Good News and ourselves with those who do not know him, and discipling and mobilizing believers worldwide. As we steward the resources God has entrusted to us, we must ask: Are we maximizing Kingdom resources to their fullest for the sake of our mission? Do we have barriers of entry for new workers? Does our purpose resonate with our prayer partners, in our partner churches, in our homes, and our communities? Are new workers willing to live commissioned and sacrificial lives?

Recently, we have been re-examining our pay model in light of these questions. Most of our stateside workers live in housing provided by the organization. This is a tremendous blessing while serving with WMPL. It removes a significant monthly expense, allowing our workers to focus entirely on ministry without worrying about how to pay their bills. Yet, there are trade-offs. For our workers, this means they do not build personal home equity during their years of service. For the organization, it means we must continue to maintain these houses, pay the bills, and keep detailed records for each property – resources that could potentially be allocated differently if we explored other models.

We are prayerfully asking if there might be a different way – or at least a more straightforward way – to frame the total compensation our workers receive while maintaining our principles. Allowance is just one part of the picture. Our workers also receive housing, insurance, retirement contributions, and often have access to work funds. While we are not like many organizations that guarantee a fixed allowance, God is faithful and has met the needs of our staff time and time again.

Our desire is to share the cost it takes to field our workers. On our website, each worker has a listed “fielding cost” – the calculated amount it takes to keep them in their place of service. This includes not only their allowance, but also their housing, health care costs, and retirement.

Thanks to your generous support and continued prayers. I am delighted to share that all of our staff received their full allowance in July. This is a testimony of God’s provision through his people. Your partnership makes this possible, and together, we are praying for, sending, and sustaining workers who bring the Good News to the least-reached peoples in the least-reached places.
