Measuring Wealth

Jesus gives his followers a stark warning:

No servant can serve two masters, for either he will hate the one and love the other, or he will be devoted to the one and despise the other. You cannot serve God and money.

Luke 16:13 ESV

The original word translated as “money” can also be translated as “mammon,” “riches,” or “wealth.” On a human level, it can be very easy to look at our life circumstances and measure wealth in physical or temporal terms. I find that the world encourages us to measure our wealth in many stored forms, such as dollars, gold, silver, stocks, bitcoin and, for some people, in cows or other livestock.

Jesus also admonishes his followers to not lay up treasure on earth where moth and rust can destroy and where thieves can break in and steal it. He warns us, “For where your treasure is, there your heart will be also.” (see Matthew 6:19-21 ESV) A little later, Jesus tells his disciples,

Seek first the kingdom of God and his righteousness, and all these things will be added to you. Therefore do not be anxious about tomorrow…

Matthew 6:33-34a ESV

As we increasingly seek after his kingdom and his righteousness we will also see other needs falling into place. When we do this, we begin to measure our wealth not in this stuff that we have, but in what we are able to give and how we may bless him and others.

I am so thankful that in our Prayer League community I have witnessed people who have sacrificially given their wealth, time, and energy for the advancement of the kingdom of God. As we enter into the season of Lent, I often reflect on my own mortality and remember that I will someday return to dust. I ask myself, “What will be the true measure of this life that our Lord has given me? Am I wholeheartedly seeking after this kingdom of God, or am I trying to store up for myself things that are temporary and I cannot take with me?”

I continue to be humbled by the generosity of this community. Thank you for your sacrificial giving, for the time spent in prayer for the least reached, for our current and future harvest workers, and for our partners around the world. May we all continue to pour ourselves out for his kingdom and his glory! May our Lord continue to use you as his ambassadors wherever God has you placed.
