Being Content with What God Provides

“I am not saying this because I am in need, for I have learned to be content whatever the circumstances. I know what it is to be in need, andI know what it is to have plenty. I have learned the secret of being content in any and every situation, whether well fed or hungry, whether living in plenty or in want. I can do everything through Him who gives me strength” (Philippians 4:11-13)

I have always found Paul's writings challenging. They bring me to my knees. In this verse we find that Paul is content in every circumstance. The verse convicts me, but brings hope, too. Paul learned to be content. Maybe I can learn, too.

Paul uses a word that elsewhere means “self-sufficient.” Paul states that he is self-sufficient. Not because he is great enough to provide for his own needs. but Christ in himis great enough. Paul is dependent upon Christ for all his needs.

Paul is Christ-sufficient. Paul is able to say these words because of his thorough understanding of God. Not mere dogma or theology. Paul believes that God is sovereign, trustworthy and exactly who he says he is… the great I am! “The fear of the LORD leads to life: Then one rests content, untouched by trouble” (Psalm 19:23).

It is so easy to let doubt slip in. We begin to question God's sovereignty, or love, or provision. I remember someone once telling me that they know God will provide what they need – they just don't know if they will like how much he says they need. I feel this way too, sometimes. I let my limited vision of God cause me to worry. I start to take things into my own hands. I trade a chance to grow and learn to stay in my mediocre way of living.

Paul can state that he is content in all circumstances not because he always has whatever he wants or needs in this physical life, but because he has the one thing that truly matters. He has Christ in his life, and that will never change no matter what his circumstances may be. It is all too easy for me to look out at this world, with my many desires of whatI want to have and to become, never realizing I already have all that I need or could ever want. The most precious possession is already mine. Christ in me – his love, forgiveness, mercy, life. He has given me more than I could ever hope for.

As we go about the weeks and life ahead I pray that the words of this song by Chris Tomlin may resonate in our hearts, minds and lips:

“All of you is more than enough for all of me, for every thirst and every need. You satisfy me with your love, and all I have in you is more than enough.”
