Seeking God First

Our Lord Jesus talks about money and possessions many times in the New Testament. For example, we encounter Jesus saying, “Do not store up for yourselves treasures on earth, where moths and vermin destroy, and where thieves break in and steal. But store up for yourselves treasures in heaven, where moths and vermin do not destroy, and where thieves do not break in and steal. For where your treasure is, there your heart will be also.” (Matthew 6:19-21 NIV)

Jesus frequently warns us to be mindful and responsible with our money and possessions without allowing them to become the foundation of our trust and confidence. Rather, we recognize that all the financial resources we have come from God and we have been entrusted with his resources to invest them in the advancement of his kingdom and for
the good of others. Ultimately, we have been called to be good stewards of God’s resources while fully depending on him.

With that perspective in mind, we approach WMPL’s investments. Our Investment Subcommittee, which is comprised of key WMPL Board members and Home Staff, continues to meet with our financial advisor quarterly to review our investment portfolio and the investment strategies we have in place.

Last year we shared about the pandemic-related stock market crash. At our most recent Subcommittee meeting we learned that, while the market is slowing recovering, we are still experiencing the effects of economic recession and inflation which affect our investment assets. Let us continue trusting in our Lord’s sovereignty over these matters. Let us continue seeking God’s wisdom for the members of the Investment Subcommittee as they consult with the financial advisor on ways to make necessary adjustments to our investment portfolio. Jesus reminds us to keep our eyes on God: “But seek first his kingdom and his righteousness, and all these things will be given to you as well. Therefore do not worry about tomorrow, for tomorrow will worry about itself. Each day has enough trouble of its own.” (Matthew 6:33-34 NIV)
